Make Money with Hubpages

Hubpages is a Squidoo type website where members can create individual webpages, called Hubs, and earn money directly into Adsense and other affiliate or ad accounts. There is definitely a potential to earn money through Hubpages so let me go through some of the how-to’s, whys, benefits and potential downfalls of hubpages for you. You can see some of the hubpages I’ve put together by checking out my Hubpages Profile. (Note – if you sign up after clicking that link I do get a credit for the referral.)

How to Start Writing for Hubpages

Sign up and create an account. Everything is explained very step-by-step and I have found the hubpages VERY easy to put together. I like to put my little off-topic ideas up there that don’t really fit in anywhere else I write at. I’ve also reworked and expanded some of my articles previously published elsewhere. Easy, easy, easy.

Each component of the hubpage is easily added or deleted using the Module editor feature. Easy. SO easy. And, it’s like having a miniature website all your very own with none of the management/server/etc issues because Hubpages owns the website.

How Does Hubpages Pay?

The revenue modules (Amazon, Adsense, etc) are split 60/40 between you and Hubpages website. So if you have 100 people visit your hubpage one week, 60 of those page impressions will show an Adsense block with YOUR adsense information (ie YOU get the money if someone clicks the ad) and 40 of them will see an Adsense block with the company information (ie Hubpages gets the money). 60/40 is a decent split from other sites I’ve seen.

Benefits of Writing for Hubpages

It is easy to put a hubpage together. They go together rather quickly, and it’s easy to tackle the writing in a module- by-module way. Also, if the idea of putting together an entire website feels overwhelming to you, then consider making one hubpage. Then later, when you have time, make one more. And then one more. :-) Because each hubpage is individual, you are finished with THAT hubpage as soon as you finish it. As opposed to this website which is never finished. Sort of like my laundry. Ugh.

Probably one of the best parts about Hubpages is that your content is completely yours at all times. Which is significant if you ever want to reuse the material elsewhere at a later time.

Are There Downsides of Writing for Hubpages?

As with all web content sites, you end up sharing some of the revenue with the website owners. But, as I said, 60/40 is a rather generous split, and the revenue comes to you daily. I can check and see which hubpages are getting adclicks, see immediately when someone purchases a theatre makeup kit from Amazon.com using my affiliate link, etc. I have found that for me personally, Amazon affiliate links were more successful than adsense, but one of my colleagues average $300 in revenue from a single hubpage so that is very significant. I’m not there yet with hubpages, but I’m working on it! *laughing*

My colleague supports her and her daughter as a single mother from her hubpages and writing at BellaOnline. Amazing. She said she has over 300 hubpages, which is similar to the number of articles I have at Suite101. Her income from Hubpages is currently higher than my income at Suite101 but my traffic and exposure at Suite101 is higher, so it might be a trade off.

I found Hubpages easy to write, a joy to put together, and I love the fact that you keep all rights at all times. Unlike many of the other content sites currently available.

If you have not considered HubPages as a money maker, think again. HubPages is being used by savvy writers to earn money for their work, all on autopilot. You can learn how to duplicate or surpass their success.

Some writers write to express themselves without a thought about making serious money from their work but a new breed of

savvy writers have discovered how to use HubPages to make money for their creativity without lifting a finger from the keyboard. In case you have never heard of HubPages, HubPages is quickly becoming an "authority" site with Google based upon high quality content being created by writers, the kind of content that Google loves to index. It's free to join and free to grab your own piece of the HubPages community for whatever you choose to write about. You can even pepper your hub with personal, business, or product photos if you choose.

The uses of HubPages are practically unlimited, except when it comes to adult material that might offend a family audience. That kind of material is not allowed. In fact, one hubber was censored for showing a too-revealing photo of her breast feeding her child. So, need I say that you should read the HubPages guidelines before you do any work on your hub.

While writing one hub with great content and backlinks to your off-hub websites or your money making offers is like a sweet cupcake with a cherry on top, you can have dozens of cupcakes, because you can write as many hubs on as many different topics as you like. Some hubbers have upwards of 100 hubs they are managing on various topics. Most of the hubs generate some revenue sharing income.

Before you jump into HubPages you need to do a little thinking and research. You need to consider what your first hub page is to be about and what is your goal? Is it to make money? Is it to showcase your writing? Well, you can do both in a couple of ways.

HubPages shares ad revenue with content creators, that is, writers like you. It can be a 60-40 split. 60 for you! You can decide whether to show Adsense ads, Amazon products, or eBay products, all of which give you a commission just for being placed on your hub. It's not enough income to fire your boss but it can be nice extra money.

For bigger earnings and a chance to quit your day job, consider linking to your own products or to affiliate products in addition to the revenue sharing modules offered by HubPages. The top HubPages earner makes a steady $1800.00 a month while many other hubbers earn around $1000.00 a month. Most, however, make pocket change because they simply have not monetized their hubs correctly.

What if you have no idea of what products to sell?

This is where you need to think about what your hub topic is going to be about before you create your first hub. You need to find hot products to promote, or create your own, and build your hub with keywords that will attract an audience. Remember, though, you will have to write content for your hub that is of the same theme as the product you are promoting. If you write about Poodle training, the product you are promoting should be about Poodle training not Beagle training! So, choose smartly.

You should pick a product in which you have a passion or, at least, in which you would have no trouble frequently writing about. Now, your writing need not be "professional" so don't let that hold you back. Just write as if you are talking with a friend. Don't over-think it and keep your content short and to the point. You should leave some questions unanswered so the reader might click through one of the revenue sharing ads or to your off-the-hub website or product offer.

On a cautionary note, do not create a hub that is hard sell or blatant spam. Fellow hubbers will trash you quickly and get you booted. You must provide lots of helpful content and then you can soft sell your product.

You should write your content in a conversational voice, not like a professor or teacher.

The key to HubPages is generating word-of-mouth among other hubbers so they will be quick to vote up your hub. On the other hand, if you spam, you will quickly see your hubs voted into oblivion because, frankly, it will look like you could care less about being part of a community of people who pride themselves on sharing knowledge and opinion. Need I say that spammers deserve what they get?

HubPages, if done correctly, will put some serious money in your bank account.
