Had a carpet installed by Normandy Carpets (Tapis Galerie Normandy) in Pointe Claire, West Island, Montreal in a basement room with a set of 5 stairs. I dealt directly with the owner, Barry Frank.

First issue - Originally told us the carpet could be installed within the week and says he will call the next day to confirm date. He does not call the next day, but calls back three days later (after I left two messages) and says that the carpet would be two weeks delayed.

But because he had originally said within the week, I cleared the room over the weekend (which is a home office) of all the furniture, computer, etc. which was a big inconvenience to work afterwards.

The owner’s response was that it was not his fault because it was back ordered from the factory. But it was his fault to tell me an install date before he checked with the factory.

Second issue – The owner calls to confirm the real install date and says that they would start at 7:30 am. I said this was too early as I had guests over that day. He says no problem, they will show up at 8:30 instead.

Install day comes and the installers show up at 7:30 anyway.

I mention that to the owner and he says that it’s the installers fault and that it’s better that they show up early anyway!

He didn’t hive a shit about the fact that I specifically told them not to come that early and was not apologetic at all.

Third  issue – The carpet terminated at the edge of a staircase and needed a moulding of some sort to finish it off. The installer cuts the wood moulding to install it, and I notice that it is all scuffed up and not even varnished. I told the installer not to nail it down because it needs to be sanded and varnished first, something I can do myself. He said no problem.

Time comes for final payment and I tell him I have an issue with the moulding and that I should not be charged for it. I show him what they wanted to install and he tells me that it is a nice piece of oak blah blah blah, again not listening to me at all that it needs sanding and varnish.

Eventually he agrees not to charge me the price of the moulding, and then takes the moulding with him! Of all the cheap things to do, he could have left the two feet of moulding that was already cut to size for my door!

Fourth issue – Not the biggest thing in the world, but just compounded by all the other problems is that although the installers were very nice people, they did not even come prepared with their own garbage bags for all the carpets remnant cuts that needed to be thrown out.

So in general, the install of the carpet was properly done and I am satisfied with that. What I am not satisfied with at all was the attitude of the owner, who did not listen to me, the customer. He took no responsibility at all for any of his errors when dealing with me and did not offer anything to rectify any problems that occurred during the process at all.
